Dayton Hamvention Daily Report -- May 22
Sunday Hamvention crowds were thinner, as is always the case, but there was still quite a bit of activity inside the complex. In the flea market, shoppers were picking through last-day bargains.
According to John Bee, N1GNV, of Quicksilver Radio, overall attendance seemed to be at least the same as last year, if not somewhat higher. In terms of business, John stated that his sales volume was substantially higher compared to previous years. “Frankly, I think this may be my best Hamvention ever.”
Computer dealers reported a large surge of interest in laptops and netbooks. Used laptops were selling at less than $150 with new models going for as little as $300 to $500. A number of amateurs were spotted hauling away wide-screen LCD monitors, which were also selling at discount prices.
The MFJ booth was still drawing heavy traffic Sunday morning. The new MFJ-9200 multiband QRP transceiver was a major attraction, as was their new high-power remote antenna tuner.
The nearby DX Engineering booth also drew a considerable number of visitors with several new items on display.
At the ICOM booth, Ray Novak, N9JA, said he was pleased with the 2011 Hamvention attendance. “I wondered if the high gas prices would keep people home, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.”
