Contester and DXer Wayne Smith, VO1TA/VO1WET, SK
A well-known voice from Newfoundland has gone silent. Wayne Smith, VO1TA/VO1WET, of Heart’s Delight-Islington, Newfoundland, died unexpectedly July 1. He was 59. Smith was a contester and ARRL DXCC Honor Roll DXer, who operated from 1.8 to 50 MHz, CW and SSB. He served in the Radio Amateurs of Canada Newfoundland-Labrador Field Organization. Former RAC NL Section Manager Joe Craig, VO1NA, said he was shocked to learn of Smith’s passing. “Wayne was very well known and respected in VO-Land,” he said, adding that Smith was one of only two Newfoundland-Labrador amateurs to have worked North Korea (P5). Craig said Smith had called the provincial HF nets on 40 and 75 meters for decades and provided numerous signal reports for experimental transmissions on 60, 600 and 2200 meters over the last 10 years. “Wayne loved Field Day and socializing,” Craig added. “He was technically competent and a model amateur who will be very sadly missed by his many friends in Newfoundland and Labrador and around the world.” — The Daily DX, Joe Craig, VO1NA
