Simple question for anyone who's done it. I would like to install a 2M rig, 50w max power in my pickup, a 2002 Ford. I'm concerned about the OBD-II computer that runs the engine being damaged by stray RF, and the astronomical replacement cost. Since I'm not planning a permanent install I would prefer to use the high current socket on the dashboard and a mag mount antenna. A box in the power cord with some caps & chokes will be added. Is this enough? n2nbe |

My own experience (in an Acura TL) is that 50 W on 2 M is no problem. The RF stays in the coax until it reaches the antenna, which is mounted on the trunk lid. There's no real guarantee, but auto control systems need to be able to withstand typical VHF power levels you would get from a passing police or fire vehicle, for example. As to power, typical cigarette lighter circuits have limited current ratings. Check your owner's guide. You might check with k0bg.com. 73 Martin AA6E |

Thank you. I'll be using the "High current" outlet, it's fused at 30A. |

Or maybe I won't be using the "High Current" outlet after reading k0bg's information after all. |

I run a Yeasu FT 2800 in my 02 super crew. There won't be any effects to the PCM. Are you sure you have a 30 amp outlet? Most of the ports are rated for 10 amps max. The cigar lighter is a special socket and not reliable for regular plug uses due to the way the socket is made for that use. The plugs normally used for assories are only rated for 10 amps. My radio draws very close to 10 amps and would blow the fuse on high power after a few mintes talking. Consult your owners manuel around page 200 for fuse / circuit rateings. I custom built a filter that will pass at least 40 amps from a fused 30 amp # 10 feed direct from the battery. It all works very well. good luck. |
