Upcoming Contests - Things to Do Upcoming State QSO Parties For those of you who enjoy state QSO parties, here are some upcoming events that might be of interest to you. You can also find more details in the Contests section. April 15: April 16: ARRL Rookie Roundup - SSB The ARRL Rookie Roundup begins on Saturday, April 16 at 1800 UTC, and concludes at 2359 UTC. Rookie Roundup is a great oportunity for newly licensed operators to experience competitive Amateur Radio operating. A Rookie is defined has having been first licensed or having made their first amateur radio contact in the current calendar year or the previous three calendar years, regardless of their license class. You can also be considered a rookie if you haven't made any contest contacts using SSB phone before the event. Visit the event webpage at www.arrl.org/rookie-roundup for rules and more information. North American SSB Sprint The North American SSB Sprint Contest, begins April 23 at 0000 UTC, and concludes at 0400 UTC. The four-hour contest, on the 80-, 40-, and 20-meter bands, are short, intense competitions which challenge the best operators, while allowing others to sharpen their contesting skills. Operators who have never participated in the Sprints before should take a look at the Tips & Tricks section of the website. For complete rules, visit ssbsprint.com/rules/. 2023 VHF and Up Spring Sprints The 2023 VHF and Up Spring Sprints, sponsored by the Central States VHF Society, continues on Tuesday, April 18, 7 - 11 PM local (222 MHz); Wednesday, April 26, 7 - 11 PM local (432 MHz); Saturday, May 6, 8 AM - 2 PM local (902 MHz and up); Saturday, May 13, 2300Z - Sunday, May 14, 0300Z (50 MHz). (The 144 MHz Sprints occurred on Monday, April 10 -ed) Classes: Stations will be classified as either Single Operator or Rover. A portable or mobile station that operates from only one grid is considered a Single Operator station. A Rover must operate from at least 2 grid squares. All legal modes may be used in the event. More information and rules are posted at: https://sites.google.com/site/springvhfupsprints/home/2023-information The year-long ARRL Volunteers on the Air event continues, recognizing ARRL volunteer's support and contributions. Get on the air and make contacts with as many ARRL volunteers or members as possible. There will be week-long activations of portable W1AW/# stations in all 50 states, and in several US Possessions/Territories. For a schedule of W1AW/# portable operations, see the W1AW Portable Activations Schedule. Be sure to upload your logs to LoTW and check your score online. Bulletins 2023 Florida QSO Party The 2023 Florida QSO Party (FQP) begins on Saturday, April 29 at 1600 UTC and concludes on Sunday, April 30 at 2159 UTC. This year, there will be a total of 12 1x1 special event stations whose call sign suffixes spell CITRUS. Contact at least one station of each suffix letter spelling the word CITRUS to earn a special Spelling Bee award. The stations will be using both modes (phone and CW) for the duration of the event.
