The Amateur Radio Society at LSU is open to all current LSU students. Faculty, staff and alumni also participate, primarily as mentors. It was founded in 1922 by Wilmer Barrow, a Baton Rouge native who majored in EE at LSU. Barrow earned a doctorate from the Technical University of Munich in 1931, and then joined the faculty at MIT. In 1936 he shared credit for developing microwave waveguide, and in 1938 presented the first design for the microwave horn antenna.
The club station is in Nicholson Hall on the LSU campus and uses the callsign K5LSU. The club also holds the W5YW call, which in 1926 replaced the original call 5YW issued in April 1923.
